What is Quartz?

Quartz1 is a hard and durable mineral that takes an excellent polish. It occurs in many different geological environments, in numerous different forms. The quartz you get in a quartz coffee table is actually partly a man made material. 10% of a quartz coffee table is made up of resin2 and the rest is an aggregate of crushed quartz and other materials. This aggregate is fused with a resin which binds the rock under intense heat and pressure to produce a quartz slab. Colouring is added to the slab to give it the desired finish.
