What Is Onyx?

Geologically onyx is a compact banded travertine composed of very fine-grained calcite. A characteristic of onyx is how light can shine through translucent patches in the material and its agate-like bands. These agate-like bands form when ground water circulates through the onyx deposit and oxidises the stone.
