Choosing an Oval Shaped Granite Table For Your Dining Room
Oval dining tables made from granite are luxury items of furniture which will enhance any home. These dining tables are ideal for rooms which are either narrow, or tight for space. The reason for this is, the curved edges of the table top. These curved edges serve a dual purpose.
First, they allow more people to dine at the table in comparison to a rectangular table of the same size due to the angling of the curves. And second the curves soften the aesthetics of the table giving the room the illusion of more space.
Granite dining tables outperform all other natural stone dining tables when it comes to durability. Whether you decide to have a granite or an oval marble dining table, will come down to which properties you value the highest. Granites are more durable than marble, but most people find marble the more attractive of the two materials.
The choice of which material to use will come down to personal preference. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and only you can decide how attractive you find a material. Additionally, only you will know how much durability your table will require and how much of a factor durability will play in to your decision of which material to choose.
If you decide to go with an oval shaped granite table, you can be assured of a material which is extremely durable, aesthetically pleasing and with properties which make the most of your room's space.

The Geology Of Granite
In terms of the decorative stone market you will also see several stones marketed as ‘granites’ when they are technically a dolerite1, gabbro2 or syenite. There is nothing wrong with this and it is mainly done for simplicity. These stones all share very similar properties to granite. Let’s look at the geological terms for these different variations.
All of these variations are igneous rocks3 which are rocks formed when hot magma cools. Due to the relatively slow cooling process large crystals can be formed, Emerald Pearl is an example of one of the granites where this happens.
Most of the minerals of igneous rocks used for decorative purposes are siliceous. And these rocks tend to be hard and durable. This is the reason for granites being able to take an excellent polish. Igneous rocks can be divided between plutonic rocks and volcanic rocks.
The variations we are going to discuss below are plutonic rocks. Plutonic rocks form when molten rock cools and solidifies inside the crust of the Earth without ever erupting to the surface from a volcano. The crystals of different minerals are mixed together, giving the mottled appearance seen in many granites.
Granite is the best known of the plutonic rocks. It is comprised of quartz, potassium, mica and plagioclase feldspars. It is also common to find hornblende. Baltic Brown is an example of a true granite.
Syenite is a coarse grained intermediate plutonic rock. This is composed mainly of alkali feldspar with either minor quartz or feldspathoids (it must be one or the other, not both), plagioclase, biotite, hornblende and other dark minerals. If the stone has a large amount of nepheline it is categories as a nepheline syenite. The larvikite Blue Pearl is an example of syenite.
Gabbro is a coarse-grained basic plutonic rock. It is a mixture of plagioclase feldspar and augite with some magnetite. If you swap the augite for orthopyroxene you would have a norite. Both Star Galaxy and Nero Impala granites are examples of a gabbro.
Dolerite is a medium-grained basic plutonic rock. Just like gabbro it is a mixture of plagioclase feldspar and augite with some magnetite. The reason the grain size is smaller in a dolerite is because this rock is formed in intrusions and dikes. Nero Zimbabwe is an example of a dolerite.
